If you’ve seen some of my posts on Twitter lately, you know that I’ve become obsessed with the show Mad Men. I’m a little late to the game, but over the last few days I’ve really dug into Season 1 of the show, which is set in the advertising world in Manhattan in 1960. The series is wonderfully written and perfectly acted; the look of the show is cool, and of course the music is incredible (even the title sequence exudes a swell retro chic).
As I was downloading Season 2 on iTunes last night, I discovered that iTunes U has an amazing collection, sponsored by Duke University, of vintage ads from the 1950s to the 1980s, and you can download them for free! There are literally thousands of them at your fingertips. Of course, many (if not most) of these commercials were from before my time, but I’ve gotten a nice nostalgic kick out of seeing the ones I recall, particularly the Hasbro toy ads.
Check them out here.
